Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 25th anniversary is approaching

Posted by Tracie Merrill, Library Board member on March 9, 2014

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill on March 24, we wanted to share some interesting articles and video links to reflect on the spill.

Have sea otters recovered from the spill?  Find out in this news article.

What caused the spill? Was the captain really to blame? This 4 minute Alaska History video will tell you!

Does oil released from the spill still persist along Alaska’s coast today?  Click here if you want to know.

Want to hear some first hand stories of the spill? Look no farther than these wonderful video interviews being collected and recorded through a partnership between the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council (RCAC), the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the Alaska Resources Library and Information Services:

These stories will be archived within Project Jukebox, the Digital Branch of the University of Alaska Fairbanks Oral History Program.

The Seldovia Public Library will also be hosting an Online With Libraries (OWL) video teleconference later this month as Seldovia Oil Spill Response Team members commemorate the anniversary of the spill by sharing their personal stories and insights – Look for announcements about this very special VTC event. That’s not all, though! Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council (RCAC) staff will potentially be doing some public presentations/outreach in partnership with the Library later this year (probably in the summer months) to Seldovia community members about the oil spill and Project Jukebox so stayed tuned! You are not going to want to miss any of this.
