Report on the 10/27 library board meeting

Posted by Laura Haskins - Library Director on October 28, 2010

At its meeting last night in the library, the board reviewed a number of reports from its members. These included a delightful presentation by Shirly Giles on some of her discoveries to date in working on organizing the archives of the Seldovia Woman’s Club. These archives go back to about 1933 and concern a number of basic community programs such as funding to put in a proper road to the school. Shirly plans to organize the documents and then the board will consider digitizing and perhaps publishing the collection or excerpts from it online.

The board considered participation in the federal E-Rate program, which gives discounts on telephone and internet service fees, but voted unanimously not to participate at this time. The decision was based in part on the difficulties for staff that would be posed by maintaining and implementing internet content filtering. While the board’s current policy on internet use forbids illegal activity, the board’s stance has been one of support for individual freedom of information within those limits.

The board approved an amendment to current patron eligibility policy. While the library offers borrowing privileges to both visitors and community members, the new decision restricts campers from borrowing materials. The restriction is based upon previous experience and ongoing concerns with campers’ inability to protect library materials from weather-related damage. The restriction does not apply to visitors in recreational vehicles.

Treasurer Leny Buchman agreed to postpone her resignation until the January meeting, pending contacting the two board members who were not at the meeting to determine whether either of them would be willing to take the position.

The next regular board meeting will be held on January 26, 2011.
