This month: fantasy

Posted by Laura Haskins - Library Director on July 2, 2010

Fantasy literature, art, games, and movies represent a huge field and this month’s display by Tracie Merrill highlights a few of our collection holdings in this genre.

What is fantasy that distinguishes it from fiction in general? According to Wikipedia, fantasy is “a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting,” in contrast with, say, science fiction which provides a more logical, even if still fictional, rationale.

While fantasy stories have a long history, they are perhaps most popularly known today in such examples as the Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Dresden Files, Southern Vampire, and Twilight series, all of which originated as books but have since been developed as movies, TV shows, and even a theme park.

Fantasy writing has its own World Fantasy Awards as well as such specialized recognition as the British Fantasy Awards or categories in the Cybils. There are magazines devoted to fantasy such as Fantasy Magazine and websites such as SF Signal that cover fantasy writing, authors, and works of all kinds in fantasy as well as science fiction.

There’s lots of fantasy to read online for free:

In free audiobooks, there are fantasy offerings from:

There are free fantasy podcasts available.

The Internet Movie Database’s top-rated fantasy films encompass quite a range for all ages and there are a number of new releases this summer that fall into the fantasy genre. You can watch a selection of fantasy movies and TV shows online free.

Music? Yes, there are even fantasy genre internet radio stations such as Radio Rivendell.
